Well hi there all, hope you have had a wonderful few months in the world of fishing in Melbourne and Portland.
we will start off with what was set to be a fantastic Snapper season in Melbourne for the months of January to April 2019, While the Snapper season in Melbourne departing Carrum - Launching way Patterson Lakes from October to December is when the traditional Snapper season normally is best and for that matter was still a great one.
it seemed that the water remained green and cloudy for most of the summer period meaning that the Snapper felt basically at home and didn't leave the lower reaches of Port Phillip Bay making our Snapper Fishing Charters from January to April something out of the box, with Most of the Snapper Charters having an absolute ball catching Reds from all sizes no matter what time of the day or charter.
We love nothing more than to have people catching fish and when the fish play the game it makes our life much easier and some very happy customers, to say it very simply we have for the last 5 years enjoyed the summer Port Phillip Bay Snapper run and our customers have most definitely started to take notice that it is almost a 7 month season in Melbourne for chasing Snapper in excellent Numbers, so all in all those that took advantage of the Summer Snapper run in Melbourne departing Martha Cove on the Mornington peninsula thank you and we hope to see you again soon.

Well the Portland Tuna Fishing Charters have started with a BANG!!! to say the very least with both Marco and Matt Cini taking Barrels or Giant Tuna in excess of 131 KGS and its great to see that the fishery here is nothing short of amazing, the Portland Tuna Fishery is a very healthy one and its amazing how its just so different every year.
It's safe to say that this year is far better than last year with any amounts of school Bluefin Tuna and an OUTSTANDING year for Giant Tuna.
Reel Time Fishing Charters Matt Cini and Kris Grixtri capture a 131KG Giant Bluefin Tuna on a JAKS LURE
Marco land this 105 Kg Tuna with his clients in Portland May 2019 with a fishing tale to tell!
Well, what a day it turned out to be. After getting absolutely smashed by a brute of a barrel after over 3 hours on light gear, we re-grouped and got back into it. Not long after we were tight again and this time on the 50 and this fish wasn’t going anywhere. Well done to the anglers on the rod who tagged teamed all day and let’s just say have never fought a fish like this and Marco and Rambo for getting the job done.
that's 5 and a half hours of fighting fish with only 30min break in between. That's a very testing day and u could imagine the relief for all on board when that second one hit the deck!! Well done boys The next day we had the Marshall batteries boys on board and Marco had strict instructions to take care and look after these boys as they are regular VIP customers. And boy did he step up to the plate. Day 1 the fishing was tough in close so he made the call to head out wide where they found fish and bagged out on school fish in no time. The boys wanted a barrel and Marco mentioned with the stronger winds the next day would be their best chance.
Day 2 with the Marshall boys and both boats out this time. The plan was to hit the barrels. We got to the area and set the lures, as I got up to the big patch of birds working, there was a heap of boats already on them in a small area, I thought what a disaster that is looking at all those crazy guys fighting over that patch... then I see Marco barge in to a small gap in between the other boats and then noticed him rip the boat into reverse and do crazy zig zags with boats either side of and behind him and somehow got out of that mayhem and I realized he was tight!! He had hooked the barrel in amongst all that mayhem and somehow got out of it without getting cut off by other boats. The lures had only been in the water less than 10 mins!!! After an hour and a half, the fish was on the trace and on the deck!
Well done to the angler Tom Doolan who I've been told fought the fish like a pro on just a tiagra 30. Great effort boys and when it's meant to be, Needless to say, the Marshall boys were wrapped and we look forward to having them back again.
Marco and Rambo back it up the next day with a 106 KG Bluefin Tuna with the Team from Marshall Batteries May 2019
Rambo - Matt Cini Land the Biggest ever Bluefin Tuna 169 KGS in Victoria and the second Biggest in Australia on Rod and Reel July 2019 Portland
Matt Cini Captures this 80 KG Blue Fin Tuna early July in Portland Victoria
This year we are blessed with the abundance of huge Tuna in very close to shore with some days seeing over a hundred of these massive giant beasts jumping everywhere in amongst seals, red bait, birds, whales and dolphins making this a huge attraction for not only the Tuna but sealife and off coarse US the fisherman, whether you want to just see these beasts in action, hook them or even jump in a dive, swim or maybe spear its endless what you could do, I myself love the thrill of catching them but watching them jump clear out of the water and make a massive hole in the ocean is pretty cool as well, to be honest, it leaves you speechless!
It really doesn't show from the outside how much effort goes into catching these amazing fish and they really don't get that big for no reason, its a lot of time and effort both on water and off and when the day comes together everything has to be perfect!
as I write this report and try to complete it so many great captures are happening along the way and there is no better time to mention this OUTSTANDING Capture by Matt Cini and Rambo Lawson Reel Time Fishing Charters new Deck Hand on the rod-capturing this record tuna of 169kgs the biggest ever tuna caught in Victoria and the second biggest ever tuna to be caught on rod and reel in Australia!
It will be a day that we will never forget here in Portland after many years of fishing these waters it was only a matter of time before someone captured a huge tuna and it just so happen to be us, you hear stories of people fighting fish for hours on end and think what are they doing, why haven't they got it yet? know I realize that there are fish there in access of 170 kgs and possible 200kgs this will test any anglers skills both in skill and patience, let me tell you!
the tail goes like this, as I see it the day started out with some choppy boating conditions, we put our fishing lures in very close to shore as we were in no great rush to get out too far as in these kinds of conditions Bluefin Tuna can feed very close to shore, within seconds of putting the lures out we had smaller tuna ON and everyone was excited and reeling in tuna.
With the choppy conditions, it was in Matts mind to try and get them a fish each and take them back to shore with a few of the guys not feeling too well, after speaking with the crew and them all having one fish each everyone put there hand up for another round to reach there legal bag limit of Tuna which is 2 per person per day, so off we go again.
With the sea conditions dropping looks like things were calming down and sure enough it didn't take us to long to gather the next round of tuna very close to Cape Grany just less than 3 KLMS of the coast of Portland.
Matt Cini one of the Skippers for Reel Time Fishing Charters had seen some bust-ups that didn't quite look like the normal size fish that we catch here in Portland, and once we had our bag Limit of Tuna looked over to Rambo and said put this lure out!!
Little did everyone knows except Rambo what I was planning for him after everyone had caught their fish and was ready to pack up, it was evident that all on board where not up to spending hours fighting a huge tuna, but out the blue Rambo yells out good patch of birds working 11 Oclock, in the distance we head over and see a good friend working it with no luck, we decide to hang around and do a few laps, I remember thinking this patch is getting really aggressive and the birds, seals, and wildlife was just starting to really get jumping and smashing the baitfish that where there, it would only be a matter of tie before a big tuna latched on!
Bang it happened and the Bent but Shimano Tiagra 50 LRS burst into flames, Rambo was set to get his wish after working so hard all season it was his turn on the rod everyone had agreed prior, we were tight and we had what looked to be a cracking fish.
We were about to spend the next 2 hours on one of the biggest ever Bluefin Tna caught in Australia WOW everything was going our way huge fish, good boat driver, Rambo the only person on board that could have gone the distance, brand new line doubles and a brand new Lure freshly rigged, everything felt good, until about 1 hr after the fight when Matt realized that the fish hadn't moved far and we where doing circles for ages, at this point we realized that we either had a monster on or a decent fish had snagged us on the bottom or wrapped around a cray pot, this was Matt had to use his skills to make the decision to try and move this beast and find out either way what the answer would be, Make or Break!
With some perseverance and some extreme pressure on the rod and Rambo, we moved the fish and seen a tail beat this ensuring us that the biggest Portland Tuna ever caught was in fact exactly that!
Both Matt and Rambo and all on board got very excited and the game settled in for another hour to eventually land or capture this once in a lifetime fish, with Matt Cini fishing for more than 30 years this would be a benchmark in his fishing carrier along with everyone else on Board the fish was landed, bleed and called for 140 kgs and matt is generally not ever far out with weighs but was later to be found that it was something very special!
Finally with the Fish Landed and in the Boat it was time to head I and weigh this absolute beast of a fish, with Bob Mcpherson waiting to greet us the ramp and Portland Bait and Tackle with there scales, as we started lifting the fish Matt was looking at the scales and was in shock with the scales reading 155 kgs with the Tuna's head still touching the ground WOW as it became visible this fish bounced the scales to around 175 kgs and 165 kgs than settled to 169 KGS, Measured 2 meters and 50mm was 700mm top to bottom and was a Male Tuna, That was a moment Matt Cini and Rambo Lawson would never forget, Matt was in a shock state and the town erupted with people and News Papers coming from everywhere and soon to be told that this Portland Tuna was the biggest ever weighed here in Victoria and the second biggest tuna in Australia to ever be caught on Rod and Reel!

Solo Jew Story
Well the day started out like this, at 4 pm I picked up a regular customer Vasily and his sister, ReelTime regulars and great friends Vas and I have spent endless hours discovering Jews in this river, also, we headed up the Glenelg River to target Mulloway or Jew Fish as they also known, with some great effort and time out in we only managed half a dozen small fish which was unusual for us as we have a great strike rate but that’s Mulloway fishing in a nutshell.
Later that night Matt dropped Vasily and his sister off it was approximately 2 am, I had to decide to head home or just sleep in my boat up river with the comfort of my amazing Vessel Undercover with the diesel heater on and my sleeping bag packed I was set to get some rest before Vasily arrives for his day 2 expedition on the River with Matt Cini.
Before I went to sleep I thought I might as well have a fish for an hr just an hr LOL so I put 2 rods in and sat and watch the rods for about half an hr, I started feeling really tired, and made my way into the cabin but leaving the rods in the water, within seconds I was out like a light with the sound of the diesel heater ticking away and the still calm night with an awesome bright full moon, I slept like a baby and woke to daylight about 9 am, after waking I was looking at the rods in the water, thinking I’m sure I put 2 rods out not 1 ? This is when I realized that something wasn’t right, I started to bring in the rod on the right and it had weight and then a huge thump, I looked to my left about 150 m down the river and I see this huge Mulloway on the surface swimming, half asleep I had to wake up and think!
There is a rod in the water this line has weight I must have the line from the rod and the fish is still attached, so I managed to reach the line end with the fish and an almighty tangle with the other rod, in my awaken state I quickly grabbed a rod from above and cut the leader off, with the fish pulling hard but tired as I have no idea of the actual bite time as I was asleep for 6 hrs, I managed to tie a double uni to the line that had the fish attached and know free from the tangled mess I was connected to the Mulloway 🙂 ()( after 5 minutes of a tug of war in comes a 30 pound 13.5 KG Jew Fish my second biggest from the river.
I wish I had a go pro going it would have been great to watch the juggling act!
Well another great fishing story you can catch a thousand fish but every know and then one is special take care all 🙂
PS I went back only a few hours later and caught the rod that had the fish on it and got my rod and reels back.
Just to top of an even better day.
