The full Tail of a freak catch in Port Phillip Bay fishing for Snapper of Black Rock.
The decision to move shallow into the reef system edge off Block Rock/Ricketts Point paid dividends yesterday. We were ticking away nicely catching some pinkies and salmon when the customer's snatcher buckled and took off under the boat. There was a big splash on the opposite side of the boat that I didn't get to see but automatically presumed that a seal had grabbed his prized snapper and made dinner of it. There was an 8 yr old kid on board who yelled out "THRESHER SHARK, THRESHER SHARK" and my deck and I Daniel Bateman just looked at each other and tried not to laugh.
A few seconds later it jumped back on the other side of the boat again and this time I saw it was a thresher and yelled "IT IS A #*$#ING THRESHER" it then charged the boat again and this time tangled most of the rods in the water. After putting on a great aerial display and Chris crossing all over the place, it finally got us on the prop. Lifted motors and grabbed the mainline and to our surprise, it was still there.
Bateman passed me the line and said it's time for you to do your Donny Mako special and handline him in. Well, challenged accepted and after some close calls we had him to the boat and a great gaff shot seen the thresher come into the boat and dealt with. Everyone took turns taking pics and then quickly gutted and bled to ensure the fish didn't go to waste and the happy customers all got to take home some quality fillets.
It was weighed at launching way Carrum and it dropped the scales at 22kg gutted so the shark was called for 25kg.
A great day for the lucky angler as we all know how rare a capture like this is. Many are hooked and lost but we were very lucky to land this great fish.
